The Michter's US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Rye is a limited-release, single-barrel Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey that is bottled at barrel strength, meaning the proof varies from barrel to barrel. A bottling at 108.4 proof (54.2% ABV) is consistent with typical releases for this expression.
Production Process
Michter's takes its standard US*1 Kentucky Straight Rye whiskey, which has been aged in fire-charred new American white oak barrels, and transfers it to a second, custom-made barrel for an additional period of maturation.
  • Second Barrel: The finishing barrel is made from new American white oak staves that have been air-dried for 24 months and then toasted to Michter's specifications, not charred.
  • Proof: The whiskey is entered into the barrel at a relatively low 103 proof, which helps to create a richer, more full-bodied whiskey after maturation.
  • Single Barrel: The toasted rye is a single-barrel product, with the final bottling strength reflecting the alcohol level of that specific barrel at the time of bottling.
Tasting Notes
The unique finishing process results in a rich, sweet, and complex rye whiskey with a distinctive toasted character, often described as a "luxury candy bar" experience.
  • Nose: Rich aromas of toffee, honey, black walnut, and a hint of campfire give way to notes of brown sugar, cinnamon, and baked apple. Some reviewers also find marshmallow, graham cracker, and s'more aromas.
  • Palate: The palate offers a rich and creamy mouthfeel with flavors of dark chocolate, salted caramel, cherry, and mint, balanced by pronounced spice and rounded oak notes. Other notes include vanilla biscotti, buttered pastry, and hints of licorice.
  • Finish: The finish is long and warm, with the mocha and chocolate notes lingering, combining with notes of browned butter, allspice, and a pleasant oakiness. The finish can also feature a burst of rye spice, sweet oak, and a touch of menthol on the exhale.
